THE UPINGTON Regional Court sentenced a 25-year-old man to 18 years in prison, with three years suspended, for the rape of his six-year-old stepson.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the SAPS management in the province was “elated and lauded the investigating officer for ensuring that a paedophile was removed from society”.

The case came to light on November 25, 2023, when the young victim confided in his older brother about the assault.

The boy told his brother that their stepfather sexually assaulted him and that he only stopped when he started crying.

The brother informed their mother about the incident. The family promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to a medical examination that confirmed the assault.

The case docket was allocated to Sergeant Elliot Geya of the Upington SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit and the suspect was arrested two days later, on November 27, 2023.

The Upington Regional Court convicted the stepfather of rape and he was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment, of which three years were suspended for five years, on May 24, 2024.

Masegela said the Northern Cape police management commended the investigative team’s efforts to bring the perpetrator to justice.

He added that the sentence reflects the police’s commitment to combating crimes against children and ensuring that offenders face the consequences of their actions.
