Criminal haven knocked down

A HOUSE in Hulana Street, which was being used as a criminal haven, was demolished on Thursday as part of a community prosecution project.

Regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Mojalefa Senokoatsane, said the initiative was to work with stakeholders to solve and prevent crime within communities.

“During a community outreach in Galeshewe, the community prosecutor was informed that there was an abandoned house widely known as the Colour Block that was in a dilapidated state in Hulana Street, Galeshewe.”

He added that according to information received many wanted criminals would evade arrest and use the house as a hideout.

“Some criminals would hide themselves in that house at night and rob pedestrians.”

Senokoatsane stated that the community prosecutor engaged with the owners of the house on how to best assist them with this structure that had become a dangerous haven for criminals.

“The family, taking into consideration the safety of their community, agreed to have the dilapidated structure demolished.”

He indicated that the owners would retain ownership of the erf.

“The NPA through the community prosecutor further engaged with Sol Plaatje Municipality regarding the use of the demolishing machinery. Sol Plaatje bought into the project and all parties agreed that the house needed to be demolished.”
