Eight Nigerian nationals accused of attacking cops denied bail

EIGHT Nigerian nationals who were arrested following an attack on a city police station and members of the SAPS last month were denied bail by the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The individuals in question, Onogu Nwaemeka, Kelecho Oken, Ebot Kennedy, Chijioke Steven, Charles Aknaji, Umemba Sophuru, Amajoyi Tochukwu and Charles Okerie Onyedikashi, have been charged with assault, public violence, malicious injury to property and interference with the law.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane stated that on the day of the incident, the accused had demanded the release of their compatriots who had been detained by the police.

“Mayhem broke out as the police tried to contain the situation and the accused started to attack the police as well as damage the state’s property. Specialised tactical police reinforcements were called and the eight accused were arrested,” said Senokoatsane.

He added that the matter has been postponed until July 18. The accused will make their next court appearance via the audio-visual remand system (AVR).
