Grandfather gets seven years for raping 15-year-old granddaughter

A 55-YEAR-old grandfather was sentenced to seven years imprisonment by the Upington Magistrate’s Court for raping his 15-year-old granddaughter in 2023.

SAPS ZF Mgcawu District spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the girl was staying with her grandparents at the time of the incident.

“During the night of August 13, 2023, she went to the bathroom at around 3am to make use of the toilet when her grandfather raped her,” said Masegela.

“The complainant reported the incident to her grandmother the next morning and it was reported to the police.”

Masegela stated that the accused was arrested the same day and charged with rape. He was denied bail and remained in custody during his trial.

“The management of the SAPS in the Northern Cape welcomed the sentence and applauded the investigating officer, Sergeant Lucky Malepe, for the meticulous investigation of the case, which resulted in the protection of the child,” Masegela added.
