IN A SUCCESSFUL joint operation, law enforcement agencies cracked down on the illegal tobacco trade in the Upington area when they seized a massive haul of illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of over R3 million.
Acting on a tip-off, members of the Upington Border Police, Upington SAPS D-relief, the Highway Patrol and officials from Sars Customs conducted a raid on a wholesale establishment.
The authorities descended upon the suspect premises on March 1. The new storeroom facility at the wholesaler was searched and the police uncovered a staggering haul of illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of R3,315,000.
The contraband was promptly seized and an inquiry docket has been opened for further investigation.
The police have warned community members against trading in illicit cigarettes and cautioned that anyone who makes themselves guilty thereof will face the full might of the law.
Residents and businesses are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to the trade in illicit cigarettes.
