THE NATIONAL Prosecuting Authority’s Assets Forfeiture Unit (AFU) in the Northern Cape division has been granted a preservation order against the chief financial officer (CFO) of the Department of Roads and Public Works, Bradley Slingers, 53.
Slingers was arrested on November 16, 2023, during a roadblock near Ultra City on the N12, where the police found him transporting large sums of cash, amounting to R679,200, in a BMW 6 series.
NPA regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane stated that Slingers explained to the police that the cash was his property, which he was going to pay his employees with.
“While further searching the BMW, the police discovered a second bag containing an undisclosed amount of cash and another two bags with cash inside, as well as underneath the driver’s seat,” said Senokoatsane.
He added that Slingers was unable to provide proof or a reasonable explanation for the cash that was found in his possession.
“The police seized the cash and an inquiry docket was opened for investigation.”
Senokoatsane said the preservation property order that was granted by the Northern Cape High Court was the result of a joint investigation between the AFU and the Office of Priority Crime Specialised Investigations Unit (PCSI), Kimberley.
“The AFU believes the cash is the proceeds of illegal activities and money laundering. This cash will be preserved awaiting an application by the AFU for the final forfeiture of the cash to the state.
“Police investigations pertaining to this matter are ongoing,” Senokoatsane concluded.
