A 27-YEAR-old man from Platfontein near Kimberley was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for raping his 12-year-old niece after she asked him to assist with washing her clothes at his house.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the girl informed her grandmother of the incident on September 27, 2021.

“The accused was arrested and remained in custody until he was sentenced in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on January 31,” said Kock.

The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, commended the investigating officer, Detective Constable Mpotsang Ruth Morolong from the Kimberley Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, for ensuring that the perpetrator was put behind bars.
