THE WOMAN who allegedly kidnapped a newborn baby from Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley is expected to make a formal bail application on September 19.
The woman made a brief appearance in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The baby was stolen from the hospital’s maternity ward on September 6 at around 5pm.
She was returned to her biological mother on September 8 following the arrest of the 21-year-old accused at her home in Greenpoint.
The accused, Andiswa Bayi, was found in possession of the baby girl and the clothes that she was last seen wearing prior to her disappearance.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said Bayi would remain in custody until she was expected to reappear in court for a formal bail application.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, the body of a newborn baby was found concealed in a plastic bag near a dumping site in Kimberley on September 9.
