THE ASSOCIATION of and for Persons with Disabilities - Frances Baard District (APD-FB) continues to be a beacon of light for the community.
This year, the organisation once again showcased its unwavering commitment to making a positive impact by distributing funds raised during Casual Day 2022.
Dorothy-Anne Howitson, secretary of APD-FB, expressed the committee’s joy and pride in being able to extend a helping hand to those in need.
"It is such a joy to be able to make a difference in the lives of others," said Howitson. “The funds collected during last year's Casual Day have been channelled towards several crucial initiatives that highlight the organisation's dedication to enhancing the quality of life of people with disabilities.”
The heart-warming display of generosity and kindness extended its embrace to the learners of Elizabeth Conradie School, where a sum of R2 500 was allocated to a blanket drive for indigent learners residing in the school's hostel. Additionally, APD-FB contributed R1 500 towards acquiring adult nappies for the Sally Aucamp Home.
The organisation's efforts extended to improving the mobility and independence of people using battery-operated wheelchairs. A sum of R9,110.76 was dedicated to the acquisition of two sets of batteries and a controller, enabling these individuals to navigate their surroundings with greater ease and autonomy.
As Casual Day 2023 approaches on September 1, the theme "Share a Smile" resonates deeply with the ideals and aspirations of APD-FB. The power of a smile, often underestimated, has the ability to transcend barriers and unite communities. Just as the famous lyric suggests, "You are never fully dressed without a smile," this sentiment holds true, especially for those who navigate life's challenges in an inequitable world.
A smile is more than a simple expression - it is a universal language that conveys support, positivity and unity. It is a reminder that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, is seen, heard, and valued.
Through the theme "Share a Smile," APD-FB aims to inspire a wave of positivity and compassion that reverberates throughout the community, breaking down societal barriers and fostering a sense of togetherness.
APD-FB is one of hundreds of such organisations across all nine provinces that take part in and benefit from the initiative of the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD). It is the primary fund-raising event and it holds a special place in their hearts and forms an integral part of raising desperately needed funds.
APD-FB extends help to others with funds from donations, especially from Casual Day. They strive predominantly to ensure that the basic human rights of persons with disabilities are upheld.
As the 29th annual Casual Day approaches, city residents of all ages and walks of life have the opportunity to contribute to this noble cause. The retro-inspired stickers, T-Shirts, caps, and bucket hats are not only stylish accessories but also symbols of support for people with disabilities. These vibrant items can be obtained from Casual Day's official website (www.casualday.co.za) and from various participating NPOs, community-based organisations, schools, retailers and companies, as well as from Dorothy-Anne Howitson, secretary of APD-FB (082 926 5754).
With each smile shared and each contribution made, APD-FB and its supporters continue to uplift and inspire, proving that even the smallest act of kindness can make a profound impact on the lives of those who need it most.
As Casual Day 2023 approaches, let us come together to share our smiles, spread hope, and build a more inclusive and compassionate world.
