A 20-YEAR-old Northern Cape man was sentenced to eight years imprisonment after he was convicted of stabbing a 21-year-old woman in Port Nolloth.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said on Monday that the incident took place on April 30, 2021 when the woman was stabbed several times in her face and head with a broken bottle during an altercation with the accused, Simamkele Nopinky Fojana.
“Fojana was arrested and charged with attempted murder but was later found guilty on assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. He was sentenced in the Port Nolloth Regional Court on July 21,” said Kock.
The district commissioner for Namakwa, Brigadier Schalk Andrews, praised Detective Sergeant Golekane Mokgothu from the Port Nolloth Detectives for the “meticulous investigation” of the case.
“It will surely send a stern message that gender-based violence and femicide will not be tolerated by the SAPS,” Andrews added.
