THE ECONOMIC contribution of the tourism sector to the economy of the African continent will be high on the agenda during the inaugural Tourism Investment Forum Africa (TIFA) that will take place at Kanoneiland outside Upington from June 7 to June 9.
The aim of the forum is to bring the tourism and investment sectors together to deliberate measures on how to create sustainable economic growth.
The Northern Cape MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Abraham Vosloo, said the forum will be held under the theme “Forging Global Partnership for Inclusive Local Economic Development Through Sustainable Investment”.
Volsoo said the forum poses an opportunity for the Northern Cape to showcase its tourism potential and splendour.
“The forum presents immense opportunities to propel the Province towards job creation, economic growth and prosperity since tourism is an important driver for socio-economic growth and development,” said Vosloo.
“As a destination, we aim to venture into the continental space, Africa. We are therefore delighted to welcome TIFA and potential investors including leaders from the African countries to the Northern Cape. I wish to encourage the investors and policymakers not to overlook the great potential this part of South Africa has to offer.
“We also believe that the forum will certainly contribute to revitalising the tourism sector in the Northern Cape and reposition itself as an important instrument in challenging investments in the industry and further to position the Northern Cape as a competitive leisure and business events destination.
“The Northern Cape is one of southern Africa’s fastest growing business events destinations. It is the largest province in South Africa and is a modern, growing region with a choice of meeting venues with sophisticated technology and accommodation to meet every price point. It further features a landscape brimming with dramatic beauty, a rich culture and history with ancient wisdoms, warm hospitality, and some of the world’s greatest “Bucket List” experiences on offer.”
Vosloo said the forum is also a fruitful opportunity for small and medium enterprises.
‘The forum will create market access for small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) from the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality to ensure inclusive growth. At the Sustainability Village, the local SMME businesses will showcase and sell their locally unique products. The Sustainability Village is a dynamic corporate gifting option for delegates.
“In addition to promoting investment projects and opportunities in the travel and tourism industry across the SADC and other regions, the TIFA will also promote transversal projects and investment opportunities in critical sectors such as infrastructure, transport, real estate and the green economy, which are key to the development and growth of the tourism sector.”
