City hosts tug-of-war championships

THE 9th All-African Tug-of-War Championships got under way at the Pirates Club sports grounds in Kimberley yesterday.

This is the first time that the city is hosting such an event and it promises to be a thrilling display of strength and teamwork.

Several African countries, as well as provinces, have descended on the city to “tug it out” and see who will be crowned the best of the best.

South Africa, Zimbabwe and Lesotho will all be taking part in the main event tomorrow.

Nine clubs from South Africa, five from Zimbabwe and three from Lesotho have also descended on the city, making it 300 athletes that will compete this year.

Yesterday saw the youth championships taking place. This includes athletes aged between 18 and 25.

Today, the African Club Championships will take place and tomorrow the International African Championships will be held.

Food and drink stalls will be available at the Pirates Club sports grounds, creating a festive atmosphere for spectators to enjoy. Entry to the sport grounds is only R10.

The event will also be live-streamed on DigiTv, allowing fans from around the world to watch the action as it unfolds.
