Suspected chop shop owner arrested in Lerato Park

A SUSPECTED ‘chop shop’ owner was arrested in Lerato Park after suspected stolen vehicle parts and a suspected stolen vehicle were found in his possession.

Members of Kimberley Crime Intelligence, the Vehicle Crime Investigation unit and the Crime Scene Management section conducted raids on the premises after receiving information about alleged illegal activities on an identified premises that was operating as a ‘chop shop’.

Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the team found a Mazda 323 on the premises that was reported stolen in Kimberley in 2021.

“The vehicle was dismantled of its body parts. Some of the parts were stored at another premises not far from the chop shop,” said Tawana.

He added that the owner of the suspected chop shop was arrested and charged with two counts of theft of motor vehicle, as well as for illegal dealing in scrap metal.

“The suspect is expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, January 10.”
