KEDIEMETSE Sehemo, 53, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Taung Regional Court for raping a 74-year-old grandmother.
The incident occured in February this year when Sehemo broke into the woman’s house at around 11.30pm.
The court heard that on the night of the incident, the woman was peacefully asleep when she felt someone shove her from the bed. The intruder proceeded to assault her and then raped her.
After raping her, he threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident.
Subsequent to the ordeal, the woman alerted her neighbour and Sehemo was arrested not long after as he was known to the victim.
The investigating officer in the matter, Sergeant Sidwell Dastile, successfully opposed bail and Sehemo was remanded in police custody until the finalisation of the trial.
DNA evidence linked Sehemo to the the crime.
On Tuesday, November 8, Sehemo pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The provincial commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, applauded the Dastile for his “meticulous investigative work”.
