NC pupils win bursaries

THE DEPARTMENT of Water and Sanitation (DWS) awarded bursaries and cash prizes to pupils from the Northern Cape who competed in the national water and sanitation education programme.

Spokesperson for the Department of Water and Sanitation Sputnik Ratau said seven bursaries and a cash prize of R39,000 were awarded to pupils in the Northern Cape.

“The first prize in the Baswa Le Meetse music category competition was awarded to Colston Intermediate School from Colston in Kuruman. They also received a cash prize of R20,000.”

“Isagontle Primary School from Kuruman was awarded third prize for winning the praise poetry category in the Baswa Le Meetse competition. The pupils also received a cash prize of R10,000.”

Ratau added that Khumo Mawela and Mekayle Strauss from Kimberley Technical High School attained second place nationally in the South African Youth Water competition and won comprehensive education bursaries that will cover their university registration fees, tuition, accommodation, food, books and a stipend.

“They also received a cash prize of R9,000.”

He stated that Lethabo Sehere from Kimberley Technical High School and Tshepang Gaobusiwe from Baitiredi Technical and Commercial High School won comprehensive bursaries for participating in the Aqua Enduro competition.

“Boinelo Olifant, Kerapetse Letebele and Gontse Baanyang from Dibotswa High School in the Joe Morolong district won three comprehensive bursaries after participating in the public speaking competition.”

Ratau said that the water and sanitation education programme was aimed at addressing skills shortages in the scientific and engineering fields by encouraging Grade 10-11 learners to study mathematics and science.
