THE MAYIBUYE Multi-Purpose Centre in Galeshewe received a facelift on Monday when the Northern Cape MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Desery Fienies, together with the head of department, Oupa Phiri, planted a citrus tree and a Nelson Mandela rose bush at the centre as part of commemorating Mandela Day.
Department spokesperson Morapedi Sekhoane said the day kicked off with officials cleaning the facility.
“The facility is found in the heart of Galeshewe township. The facility requires a massive revamp towards enhancing its outlook and it also needs to be prioritised as it is the most active centre in the township. The centre provides access to events through its conference facilities and cultural activities, such as music and dance academies including sport facilities,” Sekhoane said.
He added that the theme of this year’s commemoration is befitting as it urges everyone to play a part in uplifting their community.
“This year’s Nelson Mandela International Day is commemorated under the global theme: ‘Do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are’. It is a clarion call for people to support and participate in the campaign by bringing about sustainable interventions with lasting impact.
“The planting of a citrus tree and Nelson Mandela rose at the centre responds to this year’s focus of encouraging people to promote community and backyard gardens, supporting fruit and indigenous tree planting, and creating awareness of the intersections between food security and climate change,” Sekhoane said.
