THE DEPUTY Minister of Basic Education, Dr Reginah Mhaule, will today launch Schools Democracy Week in partnership with the Electoral Commission (IEC).
Northern Cape Department of Education spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe said that the launch will take place at Rekgaratlhile High School in Seoding Village in Ga-Segonyana in the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) District.
“The deputy minister will be joined by the Northern Cape MEC for Education, Zolile Monakali, Northern Cape provincial electoral officer Bonolo Modise and the mayors of the municipalities in the JTG District,” said Van der Merwe.
“The department has a continued responsibility to raise awareness in schools about the significance of active citizenry in order to promote democracy and human rights in South Africa. A designated ‘Democracy Week’ will take place from April 25 to April 29, 2022, where the IEC, together with the provincial education departments, will run various activities in schools throughout the country.”
Van der Merwe said Mhaule will kick off the programme by conducting a monitoring visit to Lareng Primary School in Kuruman.
