MEMBERS of the Upington SAPS conducted a door-to-door campaign in the streets of Louisevaleweg on Tuesday to raise awareness about drug and alcohol abuse.

Upington SAPS corporate communication spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela said that the excessive use of liquor and drugs were the “main contributors” to crimes such as assault, murder, rape and damage to property as well as motor vehicle accidents.

“A proactive approach is deemed necessary to reduce these cases and to encourage the public to drink responsibly, especially considering that liquor trading hours have been extended under alert Level 2 of the Disaster Management Act,” said Masegela.

“SAPS members under the command of Captain Billyboy van Wyk initiated a door-to-door campaign to address the possible escalation of these crimes and also to remind people that the coronavirus is still a reality.

“Community members are urged to drink responsibly, avoid drinking and driving and to find better ways to deal with conflict and settle altercations.”
