THE POLICE have launched a manhunt for a group of suspects following a cash-in-transit heist near the Kalahari Mall in Upington on Tuesday morning.
According to national police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe, five armed men robbed a cash-in-transit van of more than R4 million during the incident.
“According to preliminary investigation, five male suspects were in a black Toyota Avanza. The suspects forced the cash van to come to a halt, thereafter they threatened the security officials. The suspects were heavily armed and took off with more than R4 million in cash. No injuries were reported and the security officials were unharmed,” said Mathe.
“The police are on high alert and request the assistance of the community to come forward with any information that may result in the arrest of the suspects.
“A 72-hour mobilisation plan has been activated. The aim of the plan is to mobilise all resources in a bid to apprehend the suspects. Community members are warned that harbouring wanted criminals is a criminal offence and they may be charged with obstruction of justice. That will result in community members having to face the law in a court,” Mathe said.
The hunt for the suspects and investigations into the matter continue.
