Locked gates at Karen Muir Swimming Pool.
A 64-YEAR-old man died at Karen Muir Swimming Pool in Kimberley after he apparently lost his balance and hit his head.
Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson Thoko Riet said that lifeguards tried in vain to save the man.
“The incident happened on the weekend when the man was getting out of the swimming pool and he lost his balance. He fell into the water, hitting his head,” said Riet.
“We have four lifeguards at the pool and they tried to resuscitate the man, but he was declared dead on the scene. We send our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.”
Riet said all public swimming pools in the city are now closed as per recommendation by the Northern Cape Department of Labour.
“Public pools will be closed until further notice,” said Riet.
