THERE is good news for the Northern Cape after AfriForum conducted tests on the quality of drinking and sewage water in the Province, where it found no signs of harmful bacteria.
AfriForum’s district co-ordinator for the Karoo, Lize-Mari Smit, said that the water of various towns in the Northern Cape was tested from August to October this year to determine the quality of the towns’ drinking water (the Blue Drop status) and that of the sewage water (Green Drop status).
“This project was even more important this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and research that has shown that the virus can be traced in sewerage systems, meaning that one can identify focus points,” said Smit.
She assured community members that the Blue Drop results of the drinking water supply in towns in the Northern Cape had tested “clean”.
“We could determine that the drinking water in the following areas: Douglas, Hartswater, Hopetown, Jan Kempdorp, Kakamas, Kathu, Kamieskroon, Keimoes, Kimberley, Kuruman, Orania, Postmasburg, Prieska, Springbok, Upington, Warrenton and Williston complies with the minimum standards and does not contain harmful bacteria,” said Smit.
“AfriForum will continuously test the water quality because residents have a constitutional right to clean drinking water,” she added.
