Four residents test positive at city retirement village

ACACIA Park Retirement Village in Kimberley has indicated that four residents, living in two independent units at the village, have tested positive for Covid-19.

The manager of the retirement village, Ruan de Wet, said the residents did not contract the virus at the village.

“According to information supplied by the infected persons, they were exposed to Covid-19 outside the village. We are in communication with them on a daily basis, and they are doing well so far,” said De Wet on Wednesday.

De Wet stated that the retirement village was on lockdown and that all regulations were in place.

“All retirement villages in South Africa should be in lockdown, as per government regulations since the national lockdown was announced by the president. As for when the lockdown will end, we cannot state and are currently awaiting the government to lift the lockdown regulations,” he said.

Last month, several residents, as well as a number of staff members, at Silwerhof Home for the Elderly in Hopetown also tested positive for Covid-19.

The chairperson of the trust of Silwerhof Home for the Elderly, Madeleine Gerrits, said at the time that more than half of the 23 residents at the home had tested positive, as well as some staff members.

The Covid-19 positive residents, all of whom were over the age of 70, were placed in quarantine at the local hospital.
