THE POLICE were called to intervene in an altercation between Kimberley residents and patrons at a tavern in Boshof on Saturday evening.
A spokesperson for the SAPS in the Free State, Brigadier Sam Makhele, yesterday rubbished reports that an attempt had been made by members of the community of Boshof to invade the local police station.
“There were people from Kimberley who visited a local tavern after attending a funeral in Boshof,” said Makhele in a statement yesterday. “There was an altercation between one of the visitors and locals which led to the community ganging up against the Kimberley people.”
Makhele said that police were called to intervene and drove the visitors from Kimberley to the Boshof police station.
“The locals followed in a Kombi, demanding that those people be handed over to them so that they can deal with them,” he said. “The police managed to resolve the matter and the community left without any incident.
“It later emerged that during the altercation at the tavern, one of the people from Kimberley contacted Kimberley and Bloemfontein police contacts and the Kimberley highway patrol responded to offer assistance, as they were closer to the scene.”
