AN ANC Youth League (ANCYL) member, who is vying for the position of chairperson in the upcoming provincial conference, has been arrested on charges of pointing a firearm and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

He is expected to appear in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court today.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Majang Skalkie, confirmed that a 34-year-old man was arrested on Monday, at about 2.40pm, following allegations that he pointed a firearm at his girlfriend’s friend and assaulted his girlfriend on Saturday, October 7.

The suspect was pronounced by a local ANCYL branch as its preferred candidate for the position of provincial ANCYL chairperson following a branch general meeting that was held on September 3.

The branch stated that he had “impeccable credentials as a young politician” after joining the organisation 17 years ago, and was a member in good standing.
