IN AN EFFORT to offer tourists, residents and avian enthusiasts in general the best vantage point of one of the city’s under-appreciated spectacles, the Flamingo View Estate officially launched its viewing deck overlooking Kamfers Dam yesterday morning.

The deck is situated at the estate, along the N12, and will allow visitors an unprecedented view of the local dam that has become synonymous as a breeding ground for lesser flamingos and other species of aquatic birds.

Owned by local businessmen Daniel Morake and Lekgari Mekgwe, the estate is still under development but has already hosted a number of events in its marquee tents

Spokesperson for Flamingo View, Evelyn Maruping, pointed out that the viewing platform, which will soon be equipped with a coin-operated telescope, remained their core service.

“At the moment Flamingo View Estate is in the finishing stage of its first phase, which is the Flamingo Deck and venue facilities,” Maruping said.

“So far construction of all the elements required for phase one have been completed and strategies for generating income now need to be implemented.”

To this end, visitors will need to pay an entry fee of R20 for adults and R15 for schoolchildren.

The facility will be open daily from 9am to 6.30pm.
