THE PROVINCIAL Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will recognise top local athletes and administrators at the Northern Cape Sports Awards in Kimberley tomorrow evening.
Under the theme “Today’s champions, tomorrow’s legends”, this prestigious event, to be held at the Northern Cape Theatre, is the culmination of a stringent selection process and will see an array of sports teams, individuals, federations and associations from the various districts vying to be proclaimed the best in the Province.
“The sports awards were created to recognise and honour individuals and teams who have excelled both on and off the field of play,” said department spokesperson, Conrad Fortune.
“The provincial leg follows five District Sport Awards (eliminations) where stronger contenders managed to secure their spots for the provincial event against nominees of provincial federations.”
According to Fortune, this process has resulted in more nominees per category than in the past, making for a bigger and better ceremony than ever before.
“Nominees are selected from all corners of the Province, in recognition for their efforts,” he said. “The nomination process has allowed various sporting federations, league clubs and other interested parties to nominate their preferred sporting personalities from 16 identified categories.
“The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba, will also take the opportunity to confer a special recognition on the athlete who has shown immense contribution towards sport development in the Province.”
