KILLER WEEKEND on province’s roads

IT WAS a tragic long weekend on the Northern Cape’s roads with no fewer than two fatal accidents, which claimed eight lives, reported by the police in the Province.

A burst tyre is believed to have been the cause of a horrific accident on a provincial road this past weekend, which left half a dozen commuters fatally injured and several others in a serious condition.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Olebogeng Tawana, police in Vosburg are investigating a case of culpable homicide after six men were killed when the minibus they were travelling in overturned on the R384 between Vosburg and Carnarvon shortly before 6pm on Friday evening.

“Our preliminary investigation indicates that the Kombi could possibly have burst a tyre,” said Tawana. “In the process the driver lost control of the vehicle.”

The driver and five passengers were certified dead on the accident scene by emergency services personnel, while four other passengers were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

“The identities of the deceased and injured passengers will be withheld until their next of kin have been informed,” Tawana added.

On Saturday morning, an accident just outside Barkly West claimed two more lives when a bakkie rolled several times on the R31.

“Barkly West police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after two people were killed in an accident on the R31,” Tawana said.

“Two men were declared dead on the scene while a female passenger was transported to the local hospital for medical treatment.
