Thinking about tying the knot? Perhaps you’ve even discussed it with your partner and are waiting for the right time to say ‘I do’? If so, there are a few more things you should be talking about to make sure your ever after is as happy as can be.
Money money money
Unfortunately, it’s not a rich man’s world, so you’ll need to talk about money openly and honestly. How will you pay the bills, who’ll take care of settling them each month, will you have a joint account or two separate accounts and a shared one for household expenses? Then what are your long-term goals? Saving for a house, for retirement or for going away each year? These are conversations you need to have to ensure you’re on the same page financially, and that you’re happy with the way your money is working for you.
Bringing sexy back
Believe it or not, sex drive can be the cause of much marriage friction, so it’s best to discuss your shared expectations before sharing a bedroom together for the rest of your lives. Let your partner know what your needs are, listen to what they need from you and go from there. It’s normal for sexual intimacy to go through ups and downs in a long-term relationship, but if one of you has a significantly lower sexual appetite than the other, it could be cause for concern.
Just the two of us
Or not. In case you haven’t had the children conversation yet, it’s time to start talking. If both of you are 100% set on staying a twosome, fair enough. If one of you wants kids and the other isn’t either ready or sure, that’s where the discussion needs to start. Children can be a relationship dealbreaker, so the sooner you enter into that dialogue, the better.
