Miss Universe Pageant in disarray: the controversial clash with Miss Mexico that sparked outrage

The international Miss Universe pageant is currently embroiled in controversy. 

The pageant faces online scrutiny after its executive director and Thai businessman Nawat Itsaragrisil publicly criticised Miss Universe Mexico, Fátima Bosch, for her non-participation in promotional activities.

The start of the drama:

In a viral TikTok video, an angry Itsaragrisil is seen demanding that the security kick her out during the sash ceremony that took place on Monday, November, as Bosch tries to explain and defend herself as to why she could not participate in the promotional activities.

“We respect you, just as you should respect us. I’m here representing my country, and it’s not my fault you have problems with my organisation,” Bosch said.

The executive replied: “No, you must listen to me first, then argue with me.” 

Bosch then stood up and exited the room, and Itsaragrisil then said, “Stop. Security.”

In a show of support, several contestants, including the reigning Miss Universe, Victoria Kjær of Denmark, followed her out of the venue.

The Thai Businessman then threatened that if other participants left the room, they would not continue in the pageant.

Miss Universe Mexico's side of the story:

Another clip was shared, showing Bosch leaving the premises, then stopping to address the media, and revealing that Itsagrasil called her “dumb”.

“What the director did is not respectful, he called me dumb because he has problems with the organisation, and I think that’s not fair because I’m here and I do everything okay, I don’t mess with anyone,” she shared.

Miss Universe organisation release a statement:

Shortly after the drama happened, the Miss Universe organisation issued a statement, and the president of the organisation, Raul Rocha, revealed that they had dismissed Itsagrisil from all of his duties in the pageant as they support the women and will not allow him to disrespect them in any way, shape or form.

“Unfortunately, Nawat has forgotten the true meaning of what it means to be a genuine host.

“Without any further ado, I would like to make it clear my great indignation towards Nawat for the public aggression he committed against Fátima Bosch, Miss Universe Mexico.

“Whom he humiliated, insulted, and showed a lack of respect, in addition to the serious abuse of having called security to intimidate a defenceless woman.”

He further added: “For the above reasons, I have restricted Nawat’s participation in the events that are part of the 74th Miss Universe Competition.”
