IT WILL always be difficult to pin down exactly how, when and why something captures your heart. What I am referring to is how you one day find yourself in love with an inanimate object, and nothing in your reasonable mind can explain why this is.

This was my experience when it came to my affections for Cecil Kimber inspired roadsters. One day I just found myself in love with these small, neat British sportscars with the glittering spoked wheels. Just like that, without warning, MG Roadsters had captured my heart.

Imagine my excitement when I started noticing MG dealerships popping up around South Africa, and then – more recently – try to think of what I experienced when I learned about MG’s latest offering: the all-electric MG Cyberster.

A roadster reborn

The Cyberster reconnects MG with its authentic sports car DNA, blending classic proportions and driving spirit with modern electric performance. Unveiled in 2023 at Auto Shanghai, it is the world’s first open-top, two-seat electric roadster to enter production, marking a bold step in MG’s future under SAIC ownership.

Carl Gotham, Advanced Design Director at MG’s London studio, said: “Our intention was to create a completely new roadster ready for a new generation of sports car drivers – one that respects MG’s illustrious past while being absolutely modern and forward-facing.”

The car’s exterior is unmistakably MG. A long bonnet, low nose, and flowing surfaces nod to classic roadsters, while dramatic scissor doors and a distinctive Kammback rear signal its electric era credentials.

Under the skin, the Cyberster delivers 375kW and 725Nm of torque through dual motors, accelerating from 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds — MG’s fastest production car yet.

Performance that impresses

Under the skin, the Cyberster delivers 375kW and 725Nm of torque through dual motors, accelerating from 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds — MG’s fastest production car yet. A 77kWh battery provides up to 443km of range (WLTP), with rapid DC charging taking the battery from 10% to 80% in about 38 minutes.

Drivers can select from multiple modes, including Comfort, Sport, and Track, tailoring the experience from city cruising to spirited runs along winding roads. Inside, a wraparound three-screen cockpit, premium materials, and MG Pilot driver assistance bring luxury and technology typically found in more expensive grand tourers.

Global recognition

Since its debut, the Cyberster has earned acclaim, taking ‘Best Sports Car’ at The British Motor Show, ‘Best EV Roadster’ at the Top Gear Electric Awards, and ‘Most Anticipated New Car’ at Carwow’s Car of the Year Awards in 2024. In South Africa, it reached the semi-final stage of the 2026 Old Mutual Car of the Year Competition. Judges praised its performance, design, sustainability, and value.

For local drivers, the Cyberster signals that MG is not a newcomer. It is a century-old British brand, now electrified for a new generation who value performance, design, and innovation.

A statement for South Africa

For local drivers, the Cyberster signals that MG is not a newcomer. It is a century-old British brand, now electrified for a new generation who value performance, design, and innovation. MG Motor South Africa currently has 49 dealerships nationwide, with more planned in 2026, ensuring customers can access service and support across the country.

From Oxford in 1924 to the electric roadster of today, MG continues to honour its promise: to build cars that are innovative, engaging, and always fun to drive. The Cyberster brings that heritage forward, combining British sports car DNA with cutting-edge electric technology for a roadster that is unmistakably MG — and unmistakably modern.
