FOR ME, there are certain things that must come in pairs, to the point that it’s non-negotiable. Peanut butter and jam, for example, a matching pair of socks for another, and (of course) macaroni and cheese!
So it should come as no surprise that I was delighted that Volvo did their own “pair thingy” recently when, on the same day Volvo Cars unveiled the all-electric EX60, the company also offered a first look at a familiar nameplate reworked for a new era: the EX60 Cross Country.
Two Volvos at once … please pardon my drool!
The EX60 Cross Country arrives alongside the broader EX60 range, which Volvo positions as a key new electric SUV in its portfolio. Volvo says the EX60 changes the game in terms of range, charging and price.
“With this car, we remove all remaining obstacles for going electric,” says Håkan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Cars.
According to Volvo, the EX60 can travel up to 810km on a single charge in all-wheel-drive configuration. Using a 400kW fast charger, it is claimed to add up to 340km of range in 10 minutes.
Inside, the EX60 platform introduces a minimalist Scandinavian cabin with digital displays, over-the-air updates and integrated Google technology, alongside a strong focus on safety. Volvo says the EX60 features the most responsive user experience it has ever offered, with quicker access to key functions and a new multi-adaptive safety belt system designed to offer personalised protection.
Meanwhile, all Cross Country models share a common thread. First introduced in 1997, the line-up has always focused on a bolder design, added ground clearance and a more expressive, adventure-ready look. With the EX60 Cross Country, Volvo brings that formula into its latest generation of electric vehicles.
The Cross Country has been designed as the more rugged expression of Volvo’s new electric SUV, the EX60 Cross Country builds on the core EX60 package while leaning into the brand’s long-standing Cross Country philosophy of versatility, confidence and everyday usability beyond the smooth tar.
At its core, the EX60 Cross Country retains the same all-electric foundation as the EX60, including fast charging, advanced technology and all-wheel drive as standard. Where it differs is in how it presents itself — and how it’s intended to be used.
Compared with the standard EX60, the Cross Country sits 20 millimetres higher off the ground. With adaptive air suspension fitted, drivers can raise the ride height by a further 20 millimetres when conditions demand it. The same system can also lower the car at speed to improve stability, efficiency and aerodynamics, particularly on long highway journeys.
Visually, the Cross Country sets itself apart through exclusive design elements. A new Frost Green exterior colour is unique to this model, inspired by Scandinavian nature. Special Cross Country wheels, wider and more rugged wheel arches, and clear branding on the front and rear bumpers and D-pillar underline its position in the line-up.
Brushed stainless steel skid plates at the front and rear add to its more purposeful appearance.

The EX60 Cross Country will be offered with two all-wheel-drive powertrain options. The first to arrive is the P10 AWD Electric, with up to 640km of electric range. This will be followed by a P12 AWD Electric variant offering a longer range.
While the Cross Country leans into a more adventurous identity, it remains very much an SUV at heart, offering a higher seating position and an elevated view of the road ahead — qualities Volvo says are widely appreciated by customers worldwide.
“The EX60 Cross Country is the EX60 for anyone with a ‘go anywhere’ attitude,” says Erik Severinson, Chief Commercial Officer. “Built to do more and see more, the EX60 Cross Country embodies not only the sense of exploration but also a reflection of achievement. We basically invented this segment, and we felt the EX60 was the perfect next Volvo to get the Cross Country treatment.”
For South Africa, the EX60 Cross Country is already on Volvo Car South Africa’s radar, although final details are still under review.
“South Africans have always had a strong connection to exploration and enjoying the freedom of the open road,” commented Grant Locke, Managing Director of Volvo Car South Africa.
“The EX60 Cross Country builds on that spirit and will form part of the EX60’s available versions. It embodies the confidence and capability customers expect from a Cross Country model, while staying true to Volvo’s commitment to sustainability. While local availability, specifications and powertrain options are still being evaluated, the EX60 Cross Country is designed to deliver the usability and versatility required for real-world adventures.”
