Watch out, Porsche 911 Turbo and Mercedes-AMG GT: Toyota is officially entering the supercar sector with a high-tech model that takes the firm’s engineering expertise to the next level.
On Friday, the Japanese manufacturer pulled the covers off its all-new GR GT and GR GT3 prototypes, which pave the way for production models that will see the light of day in 2027.
Designed and engineered by the Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) motorsport division, the vehicles are said to represent a “major leap forward” for the brand’s performance and motorsport ambitions, employing technologies never used before in a Toyota production car.
The GT was designed from the ground up to prioritise aerodynamic efficiency and high-speed stability.

Designed as a “road-legal race car for purists”, the GR GT is built around an all-aluminium body frame, a first for Toyota, which is combined with aluminium and CFRP panels.
The GT is powered by a brand-new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, which pairs with a single electric motor and rear transaxle to produce system outputs of over 470kW and 850Nm.
Developed in-house by Toyota, the engine features a compact “hot-V” layout, with turbos mounted between the cylinder banks, and dry-sump lubrication to reduce overall engine height.

The hybrid powertrain is paired with a brand-new eight-speed automatic gearbox, which features a wet-start clutch for sharper response times.
The chassis includes low-mounted double wishbones at both ends as well as forged aluminium control arms, while braking power is provided by Brembo carbon discs.
The GT’s low-slung body was designed from the ground up to maximise aerodynamic efficiency, with this taking precedence over styling, and the rear section of the vehicle has been optimised for high-speed stability.

“The GR GT is Toyota’s new flagship sports car, engineered from the ground up as a road-legal race car. Rather than adapting a road car for track capability, TGR has effectively taken a pure competition mindset and applied it to a vehicle designed to deliver exhilarating performance on both circuits and public roads,” Toyota said.
More details on this sports car and its GT3 race car will be revealed closer to launch.
