Special edition vehicles are nothing new in South Africa, with virtually every manufacturer having one in their line-up, and when you add a “Black” moniker to it, it becomes especially popular in the market.

The latest one to do so is GWM with the Tank 500, adding cosmetic additions that essentially replace the shiny chrome bits with blacked-out exterior details.

Style with substance

The large premium hybrid seven-seater SUV features GWM’s design philosophy of “style with substance” with a gloss-black mesh grille, dark-chrome roof rails, blacked-out exterior mirror caps, black finish across the rear facia and spare wheel cover and 18-inch black alloy wheels.

The interior gets black Nappa leather surfaces accentuated with subtle dark-metal trim and ambient lighting.

Powertrain remains

Everything else remains unchanged, including the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine (180kW/380NM) and electric motor (78kW/268NM) providing a combined output of 255kW and 648Nm.

Power is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission, which will propel its 2,605 kg weight to 100km/h in 8.3 seconds and claimed fuel consumption is said to be 10.5l/100km.

“The Tank 500 already leads in power, comfort and technology. Now its design reflects that same leadership. It’s bold, modern and unmistakably forward-thinking. This update goes beyond style – it’s about making a statement,” said Floyd Ramabulana, head of marketing at GWM South Africa.

“It embodies confidence and sophistication. Every detail, from its blacked-out exterior accents to its luxurious interior, has been designed to make an impression – showing that power and refinement can coexist seamlessly in a flagship SUV,” adds Ramabulana.
