BYD (Build Your Dreams), the global new-energy technology company, will introduce its latest innovation to South Africa this November — the Sea Lion 5, a plug-in hybrid SUV designed for families who value performance, practicality, and sustainability.
Founded in 1995, BYD has become a high-tech leader focused on improving lives through technology. After nearly three decades of rapid growth, the company now plays a major role in sectors including electronics, automotive, renewable energy, and rail transit. Its mission extends beyond mobility to encompass comprehensive zero-emission energy solutions.
BYD’s commitment to sustainability includes its ongoing efforts to electrify public transport systems and help reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, driven by its long-term vision to “cool the Earth by 1°”.
“BYD is not just a car manufacturer. We’re a technology company focused on creating a cleaner, smarter future. The Sea Lion 5 represents how innovation can meet real South African needs, combining energy efficiency, advanced safety, and everyday utility,” says Nomonde Kweyi, Marketing Director, BYD Auto South Africa.
Built on BYD’s DMI (Dual-Mode Intelligent) hybrid platform, the Sea Lion 5 bridges the gap between electric and conventional vehicles, offering a balance of performance and range security. The SUV aims to introduce more South Africans to electric mobility without the anxiety sometimes associated with all-electric driving.
Inside, the Sea Lion 5 combines spacious comfort with modern technology. It features a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, wireless charging, intelligent voice control, and a large infotainment screen within a sleek, contemporary cabin.
The launch follows a recent visit to Johannesburg by Stella Li, BYD’s Executive Vice President, who reaffirmed the company’s long-term commitment to South Africa. During her visit, she emphasised BYD’s goal to support the country’s transition to cleaner transport and energy systems through investment in new-energy vehicles, charging infrastructure, and partnerships with both government and private stakeholders.
Full specifications and pricing for the Sea Lion 5 will be announced in November, with national dealership sales to follow.
The new SUV will join BYD’s expanding South African portfolio of pure-electric and plug-in hybrid models, including the BYD Dolphin Surf — currently the country’s most affordable EV — along with the Sea Lion 6, Sea Lion 7, Shark 6, and Seal. Together, these models reflect BYD’s mission to make sustainable mobility accessible to every South African driver.
