Katherine Short, the 42-year-old daughter of actor and comedian Martin Short, has died by suicide.
Katherine died on Monday, February 23, at her home in the Hollywood Hills.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call from a Hollywood Hills home at 6:41 pm regarding a female at the property.
The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office later confirmed that her cause of death was suicide.
In a statement shared with People, a representative for the family said, “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
Katherine was the eldest of Martin Short’s three adopted children.
She built a career outside of Hollywood and worked as a licensed clinical social worker in Los Angeles.
She studied at New York University and later earned a master’s degree from the University of Southern California.
Those who knew her describe her as compassionate and deeply committed to helping others, especially in the field of mental health.
Her death is another painful loss for the Short family.

In the wake of Katherine’s death, Martin Short has postponed upcoming performances.
He currently stars in the hit Hulu comedy series “Only Murders in the Building” alongside Steve Martin and Selena Gomez. The show has become one of his most celebrated recent projects.
The family has asked for privacy as they grieve.
