THE South African Police Service (SAPS) is warning vehicle owners in the Northern Cape to be vigilant and take steps to protect their property, following a number of reported incidents of theft from and out of motor vehicles.

According to SAPS, thieves are targeting vehicles in various locations, including shopping areas, social gatherings, homes, and public places.

To reduce the risk of becoming a victim, SAPS advises vehicle owners to take the following precautions:

  • Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked when leaving the vehicle unattended
  • Store valuable items such as laptops, handbags, and cameras in the boot and keep them out of sight
  • Be cautious of individuals who approach claiming to have a problem with the vehicle
  • Keep doors locked and windows closed, especially when driving in town and approaching intersections
  • Avoid using a cellular phone while driving unless using a hands-free device
  • Park in well-lit areas at night and avoid dark, isolated locations
  • Remove detachable radios and radio faceplates when leaving the vehicle unattended
  • Consider installing an alarm system and/or anti-theft device

SAPS also reminds vehicle owners that leaving a firearm in a vehicle's glove compartment or anywhere inside the vehicle when parked is unlawful.

Community members are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the SAPS Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS App.

All information received will be treated with strict confidentiality.
