South African actress Gugu Gumede recently celebrated her second anniversary since she had gastric sleeve surgery.

The gastric sleeve, also called sleeve gastrectomy, is a bariatric surgery operation which induces weight loss by reducing the intake of food.

The former “Uzalo” actress excitedly shared a video on social media praising herself for taking the step to do this surgery, revealing that it has significantly changed her life in a good way.

“Hi guys, so this is me officially two years post-surgery, and there are a couple of things I want to say.

“Man, I am so proud of myself! Cheers to me! Cheers to me for believing that there was a better me out there, a better version of myself out there, a healthier version of myself out there, and actually going ahead and becoming that,” she said on the video.

Gumede further said that she is grateful that she chose not to listen to other people’s opinions about her weight.

“Cheers to me for not conforming and listening to what people were saying online ‘ohh besim’thanda asayi stufuza (we used to love her when she was chubby)’ okay if shap mawufuna ukuba yi’stufuza yiba sona but ungikhipe kuleyonto (if you want to be chubby, you can do that but don’t include me in it,” she said.

She applauded herself by adding that her weight loss has allowed her to become the best mom to her daughter because she can now freely play with her without feeling too exhausted.

The 34-year-old shared on her caption that she cannot believe that it has been two years already since her surgery.

She wrote that she took a chance on herself, and it definitely paid off.

Since she went under the knife in 2024, Gumede has been open about her journey post-op and what ultimately led her to make the decision.

She once shared on her YouTube channel that she started to experience physical discomfort, and after she stopped breastfeeding her baby, she noticed the weight gain.

Gumede is not the only celebrity who has undergone a gastric sleeve surgery to help them with their weight loss.

Cyan Boujee, Vuyokazi Nciweni and Lungile Thabethe are among SA celebrities who were candid about their health and weight journey, revealing that they opted for surgery to help them lose some weight.
