An American TikTokker has left South Africans laughing, confused and slightly stressed after revealing his dog’s name.
The TikTok user, who goes by Keon Blue, shared a video of himself lying next to his bull boxer fur best friend while having a random late-night thought.
In the video clip, he asks his followers if they have ever lain next to their dog and suddenly realised they are lying next to an actual animal.
“Like what if they unpredictably switch up,” he captioned the video.
As he pets the dog, he casually calls out its name, saying “Khumalo”, and that is where South Africans entered the comment section, many asking if they heard him correctly. Some laughed it off, while others were clearly taken aback by the name choice.
“Khumalo? Never in my 25 years of life LMFAOOO this is so random,” one user wrote. Another commented, “Yhooo, this is infuriating the Khumalo forefathers.”
One TikTok user stepped in to explain that Khumalo is a common surname in South Africa. Keon responded calmly, saying he was fully aware. “Oh yes, I’m aware. I love names within the African continent,” he replied.
He went on to explain that he also wanted the name to sound like a character from “The Lion King”. According to him, his other two dogs are named “Keyarah” and “Kenya”, keeping with the theme.
That explanation did little to stop the jokes, because one thing about South Africans and their sense of humour, they tend to do what they do best online, and that’s trolling.
They continued to poke fun at the situation while others tried to educate him further, even when he seemed clued up.
As many users pointed out, Khumalo is not just a surname in Mzansi, but a well-known royal surname that originated in KwaZulu-Natal and is commonly associated with Zulu and Nguni people.
The name is carried by many South Africans, including well-known figures such as Kelly Khumalo, the late opera singer Sibongile Khumalo, actress Leleti Khumalo, and retired footballer Doctor Khumalo.
