If there’s one thing Apple does really badly, that’s Apple Intelligence, as they have branded their version of AI. This has been the case for some time, even though the tech giant marketed its 2024 range of iPhone 16s as built for AI, but Apple will soon turn to Google Gemini to fill the gap.

In fact, Apple had already been using OpenAI’s ChatGPT for the majority of its AI tasks.

ChatGPT was integrated with Siri (the Apple voice assistant) in late 2024, as Apple symbolically acknowledged it could not do the job properly itself.

Things have changed since then, though, as Google Gemini has overtaken ChatGPT in popularity and arguably functionality too.

Apple and Google’s $1 Billion AI Collaboration: Powering Future Apple Intelligence Features

The only thing Apple uses its AI for on its own across its operating systems is Image Playground, and that app is simply terrible and not worth using for anything productive.

Apple and Google put out a joint statement on the deal earlier this week on X: “Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalised Siri coming this year.

“After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards.”

The deal is said to be worth $1 billion per year, which Apple will pay Google.
