I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one foaming at the mouth for this series, and what’s better than getting a little smaakie of the madness than a trailer?

Showmax has just dropped the first trailer for "Die Kantoor", the Afrikaans iteration of the globally beloved "The Office". YAS!

The trailer gives us a first glimpse of Albert Pretorius stepping into the legendary manager role that Ricky Gervais and Steve Carell made iconic as David Brent in the UK version and Michael Scott in the US. Pretorius plays Flip, manager of Deluxe Processed Meats, a polony factory.

And honestly… a polony business? It’s so South African and so hilariously relatable because polony is basically a staple in most households.

“Flip thinks of himself as the Rassie Erasmus of polony; in his mind, the documentary crew is making his Chasing the Sun - about how he’s taking this team to the next level,” Pretorius explains.

And if you think of the demands of the role, you’ve got to be kind of a bad ass, no filter, straight-up business… and well, hilarious.

“He’s grappling with what it means to be a man - an Afrikaans man - but he doesn’t realise a lot of the qualities he aspires to are archaic. Or that he actually has very few of them. That’s where the comedy lies, because he tries so bloody hard just to be liked," Pretorius adds.

Exactly. Mockumentaries are meant to be like that. It’s top-tier comedy, and South African TV has proven it can transform everyday workplace nonsense into biting social commentary, holding a mirror up to ego, hierarchy, and the soft chaos of work life, all while making you laugh through your teeth.

Instead of a paper company, the setting shifts to Deluxe Processed Meats, a polony-specialising business constantly looked down on by its prime-cut head office. Add a BBBEE consortium buying into the company, and suddenly everyone’s job security feels as flimsy as a plastic tea-room chair.

Beyond Pretorius, the ensemble cast includes SAFTA winner Schalk Bezuidenhout, who looks set to be Flip’s sidekick, and Silwerskerm winner Ilse Oppelt ("Oh Schuks I’m Gatvol", "Fishy Fêshuns"), Carl Beukes ("Jozi", "The Shakedown"), Daniah de Villiers ("Mia and the White Lion"), Mehboob Bawa ("Bhai’s Cafe"), former KFM presenter Sipumziwe Lucwaba, veteran Lida Botha ("Die Kwiksilvers") and newcomer Gert du Plessis.

Not sure about you, but a polony Gatsby is suddenly sounding very appetising right now.

kykNET will preview the first episode of "Die Kantoor" on Sunday, January 18, at 8pm, ahead of the Showmax double-bill premiere on Tuesday, January 20.
