CARITAS Community Focus, a long-standing non-profit social services organisation working across the Northern Cape and North West, has called on communities, businesses, and individuals to join hands this 16 Days of Activism by “lighting a light for children”.

The organisation, which protects and supports vulnerable children and families through care, counselling, training, and prevention programmes, has launched its annual Light for Children campaign to keep these essential services running and to remind the public that every child deserves to be safe, seen, and supported.

For just R50, anyone can “buy a light” or make a donation that directly contributes to Caritas’s crisis response, family strengthening work, and child protection services across the region. Donations can be made online via BackaBuddy, and Section 18A tax certificates are available on request.

The campaign also encourages community involvement in simple, visible ways:

  • Buy a R50 light or donate online
  • Purchase a sticker at participating Kimberley businesses and wear it proudly
  • Post a short video on social media with your light shining and challenge others to do the same
  • Businesses can join the 100 Lights Challenge, pledging to sell 100 stickers in their stores or offices
  • Celebrate with Caritas on 20 December at Nelo’s Farmyard and Adventure, where a string of light “tree” will be lit, each light representing a R50 donation

Caritas says the campaign is both a fundraiser and a symbol of solidarity with children who face violence, neglect, and trauma. Each contribution enables trained social workers and caregivers to reach families in crisis, provide counselling, and run prevention programmes that change lives long before harm occurs.

“Light a light, change a life,” the organisation says, a reminder that even the smallest act of kindness can spark hope.

As the country marks 16 Days of Activism, Caritas invites the community to let their lights burn bright against violence. Every R50 brings hope closer.
