When embarking on a safari adventure, there's often a delicate balance between excitement and apprehension.
Recently, guests at Rockfig Safari Lodge in the Timbavati experienced this thrilling dichotomy when a pride of lions unexpectedly gatecrashed their sunset drinks, known as sundowners, in the Greater Kruger National Park near Hoedspruit in Limpopo.
In a captivating video shared on Facebook by Latest Sightings Kruger, viewers can see a group of lions curiously inspecting an open-air bar set up in the wild.
The post, titled "Curious Lions Interrupt Sundowners and Run Off With Cooler", describes how the guests, who had settled down for a relaxing sundowner, were surprised by the arrival of the lions.
Before making off with a cooler, the pride explored the area, even tugging at a tablecloth.
This unforgettable encounter is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those who were present.
The guests witnessed this marvellous moment with guides from the safety of their safari vehicle.
Netizens had plenty to say about the video.
Ginny Brown commented, “Omg, who would ever get that close? Ridiculously stupid. Fun until it’s not.”
Meanwhile, Nokwanda Bright Zondi mused, “I’m starting to think some of us have more than one life... or at least, a few extra lives stored away for wild adventures like this one! 😉.”
Lynn-Dee van Eeden added, “Absolutely brilliant. I love the one brave lion that finally grabbed that scary cooler box. 😂.”
Judith Mills Brooks remarked, “They were all just curious cats at heart... but grateful our own sundowner didn't have these particular uninvited guests.”
A safari sundowner is a cherished tradition that allows guests to enjoy a drink at sunset while pausing to reflect and admire the stunning African landscape.
Guides typically lead visitors to a scenic spot during or at the end of an afternoon game drive, where they can savour a cold drink - be it a gin and tonic, local beer or cocktail - while soaking in the sounds of the bush.
This practice has its roots in the Colonial era, when British settlers consumed tonic with gin to ward off malaria.
Today, however, it is embraced purely for enjoyment and is considered an essential part of the safari experience.
