In a bright moment for education in South Africa, five private schools have secured places in the coveted Spear’s Magazine 2025 Schools Index - a benchmark list of the top 100 private schools globally.

It’s a strong sign that South Africa’s independent-school sector is excelling on the world stage.

What the index measures

The Spear’s Schools Index, now in its sixth year, is compiled by a panel of international education experts.

While academic and examination performance remain important, the ranking places heavy emphasis on broader criteria - such as reputation, social and cultural impact, and value-based factors. “In some cases, schools with strong academics have been omitted where they fall short in relation to these wider considerations,” Spear’s has noted.

The top South African schools

  • Hilton College (KwaZulu-Natal)
  • Michaelhouse (KwaZulu-Natal)
  • St Anne’s Diocesan College (KwaZulu-Natal)
  • Cordwalles Preparatory School (KwaZulu-Natal)
  • Western Province Preparatory School (Cape Town)

These institutions have been recognised under the “Rest of the World” category in the index.

This recognition sends a strong message both locally and internationally: South Africa is home to private education institutions that meet global standards of excellence.

For parents and students seeking top-tier schooling, whether domestically or abroad, this provides confidence and raises the profile of South African schools in a competitive global education market.

The price tag of excellence

Top-tier often comes with top-tier costs. The schools featured command some of the highest tuition and boarding fees in South Africa, with some private schools charging over R 340,000 per year for tuition and boarding.

Parent guide: What to ask when choosing a top private school

Selecting a private school can feel daunting, especially when fees rival those of global institutions. Here are some key questions to ask before making a decision:

  1. What makes this school’s approach unique? Ask how they balance academic achievement with emotional intelligence, creativity, and leadership.
  2. What values drive the school culture? Spear’s places importance on “value-based” education- look for a school that aligns with your family’s principles.
  3. How do graduates perform after leaving? Inquire about university placements, scholarships, and alumni achievements to assess long-term impact.
  4. What level of pastoral care and student support is available? A top school should prioritise mental health, inclusivity, and mentorship alongside academics.

5. Is the cost transparent and all-inclusive? Understand whether fees cover extras such as textbooks, boarding, sports, and international exchanges.
