Must-watch horror offerings for spine-chilling thrills this Halloween

The spooky season is finally here, whether you want to indulge in a thrilling movie or something that is going to have you scream your lungs out, that is totally up to you, because we have rounded up the top classic and new movies you can enjoy this Halloween.

Monster: The Ed Gein Story

This is the third instalment of Ryna Murphy’s “Monsters” series, as it delves into the life of Ed Gein, who murdered at least two people and stole the bodies of many more from their graves.

Gein was an object of intense fascination in the middle of the 20th century, his crimes serving as inspiration for “Psycho” and  “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”

Get Out

This is a classic psychological horror film about Chris, a young African-American man, who visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend.

However, he is uneasy about this visit as he is worried about how his girlfriend’s family will react to him being black.

The family seems overly accommodating, and Chris notices that something seems off about the family’s black helpers.

The Conference 

A team-building conference for municipal employees takes a dark turn when corruption surfaces, ultimately plaguing the retreat. 

A man, scorned and seeking vengeance, plots his revenge after his father's suicide, which was caused by a real estate scam involving the construction of a useless retail mall in a farming community.

This movie is an adaptation of a Swedish novel titled “Konferensen” by Mats Strandberg.

The Elixir 

You can’t watch Halloween movies without including at least one zombie apocalypse movie.

This upcoming 2025 film dives into the life of a dysfunctional family that runs a renowned herbal medicine business, but things take a turn for the worse after the father attempts to create a new potion using a Japanese herbal plant, leading to him transforming into a zombie.

His family finds themselves at odds as they try to unite and fight to save their town from the zombie apocalypse.

Streaming on Netflix from Thursday, October 23.

M3gan 

Of course, “M3gan” has to be on the list again for this year’s Halloween. This film follows a roboticist, Gemma, who creates an AI doll, “M3GAN”, for her niece, Cady.

As M3GAN's protective instincts intensify, the doll becomes self-aware and eliminates anyone who threatens Cady. 

Gemma is forced to confront the dark side of her creation as its uncontrollable rampage turns deadly, putting them all in peril.

The Conjuring 

This movie is based on real-life events of paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, who are contacted by Carolyn Perron after she noticed paranormal activity happening in their new house they had just moved into.

While investigating the house, the Warrens discover that the house once belonged to a witch named Bathsheba Sherman, who was a devil worshipper and sacrificed her baby.

This intense and eerie horror movie follows the life of Adelaide Wilson, who discovered that she has a doppelganger that lives in a parallel/underground world as a child.

During her childhood, her family visited the beach, and she discovered a fun house that consisted of mirrors where she met her doppelganger and switched places with her.

Years later, chaos breaks out as the doppelgangers come out of the shadows with a mission to kill their surface-world look-alikes.

Smile 

After Dr Rose Cotter witnesses a patient called Laura killing herself after claiming that there is something evil following her and killing other people in front of her, and then it smiles, chaos follows.

Cotter soon starts to have hallucinations and sees people with terrifying smiles stare at her.
