AT SOL Plaatje University (SPU), the essence of its namesake transcends the pages of history; it breathes life into the mission and ideals that guide the institution. The Annual Sol Plaatje Lecture is not merely an event on the calendar; it serves as a vital reminder that the spirit of Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje continues to thrive through every facet of education, justice, and social progress that the university fosters.
This year’s lecture promises to be especially poignant, as the SPU community gathers to pay homage not just to Plaatje’s pivotal role in shaping South Africa, but also to hear from their esteemed Chancellor, Justice Steven Majiedt. Scheduled for Friday, October 10, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm in the University Library Auditorium, the lecture is titled, “Lessons learnt during my career as a judge from the life and legacy of the venerable Sol Plaatje.”
Justice Majiedt, a revered legal mind and advocate for justice, has completed two terms as chancellor and epitomises the very values that Plaatje championed: a commitment to intellectual excellence infused with humility, robust leadership anchored in justice, and a service ethos imbued with humanity. His presentation is expected to weave personal insights from his own judicial experiences with the enduring ideals of Plaatje, emphasising their relevance in today's society.
The Sol Plaatje Memorial Weekend serves as a profound opportunity for reflection, celebration, and affirmation of SPU’s identity as a living tribute to a man whose foresight, courage, and intellect profoundly impacted the nation. As the university community gathers, they will not only honour Plaatje but also acknowledge Justice Majiedt's role in furthering that visionary legacy with integrity and deep respect.
Members of the community, enthusiasts of social justice, and supporters of education are encouraged to join this enlightening evening of inspiration at SPU. This gathering is not merely a lecture; it is an invitation to engage with the lessons of the past and apply them towards social progress in the present and future.
