In today's world, where reducing waste and carbon footprints is a top priority, paper-based packaging has emerged as a hero.

According to the 2025 Two Sides Trend Tracker, a global survey on the print and paper industry, paper packaging remains South Africa's preferred sustainable packaging choice. But what makes it so special?

The benefits of paper packaging

Paper-based packaging is made from renewable wood fibre from sustainably managed planted forests and/or recycled paper fibre. This means it's biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable, reducing the environmental impact of packaging waste.

Consumers appreciate paper packaging for its:

  • Recyclability: Paper packaging is fully recyclable, and its recycling rate is impressive, with around 1.2 million tons of paper and paper packaging recovered every year.
  • Lower environmental impact: Paper packaging is made from renewable resources, reducing the reliance on non-renewable materials and minimising waste.
  • Affordability: Paper packaging is an affordable option for businesses and consumers alike.
  • Safety: Paper packaging is safe for use with food and other products, making it a popular choice for packaging.
  • Clear product information: Paper packaging allows for clear product information to be displayed, making it easier for consumers to make informed choices.

Consumer preferences

The survey showed that consumers are actively seeking sustainable packaging options.

Some key findings include:

  • 64% of consumers prefer products ordered online to arrive in paper packaging, up from 58% in 2023.
  • 58% are actively taking steps to increase their use of paper packaging.
  • 80% prefer their online orders to be delivered in fit-for-size packaging, reducing waste and minimising environmental impact.

The future of packaging

As consumers become more environmentally conscious, businesses are taking note.

The survey found that:

  • 66% of South African respondents agree that non-recyclable packaging should be discouraged through taxation.
  • 62% feel that brands, retailers, and supermarkets are introducing more sustainable packaging, up from 54% in 2023.

Paper packaging is a sustainable choice that's here to stay. With its numerous benefits, including recyclability, lower environmental impact, and affordability, it's no wonder consumers and businesses are turning to paper packaging. As we move forward, it's essential to continue promoting sustainable packaging practices and reducing waste.

By working together, we can create a more environmentally friendly future.
