I HAVE to confess, I am not too clued up on our country’s symbols and emblems. And if I were to be called into a quiz at the last minute, I am certain that I will fare extremely poorly.
Yet, that’s exactly what happened to two Grade 8 learners from Pescodia High School in Kimberley, and these two wizards came off looking pretty amazing. Taking third place overall.
Nehemia Britz and Sibusiso Selekiso’s teacher, Ms Samantha Sau,l heard about the National Identity Quiz 2025 at the 11th hour. However, confident in her students’ potential, she entered the duo, which must have been pretty intimidating.
Learners from across the Northern Cape gathered on Wednesday, September 10, for the Quiz hosted by the Northern Cape Department of Education, Frances Baard District and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. The contest was held at the Kimberley Academy, and nine schools participated.
The quiz tested their knowledge of South Africa’s history, Constitution, and national identity. According to Saul, quiz topics covered were varied: SA General Knowledge, Nationally Celebrated Days, the National Anthem, the National Flag, our country’s coat of arms, and more – quite a banquet of questions.
Schools competed in different rounds, but the main outcome was shared learning. Every learner left with a deeper understanding of what it means to be South African.
And Pescodia High left with another feather in their cap!
