So what happens when your alleged affair goes viral? In the age of the internet, the possibilities are endless.
The recent viral cosy moment between Astronomer’s chief executive officer (CEO) Andy Byron and the company’s head of human resources, Kristin Cabot, sparked different reactions ranging from shock to amusement.
Byron and Cabot were spotted at a Coldplay concert when the band was in the beginning of performing a song that would show attendees appearing on the Jumbotron screen.
The camera panned to the two with the spotlight quite literally shining on them as they embraced one another.
The video, shared on TikTok, features Coldplay’s Chris Martin spotting the couple on the kiss cam and saying, “Oh, look at these two” as they embraced.
The pair’s reactions raised eyebrows when Cabot covered her face in panic while Byron awkwardly crouched down.
Martin then joked, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy,” adding fuel to a fire that was already brewing.
The internet has since had a field day with what turned into a PR nightmare. Netizens created various memes from the viral video and have used it as a meme as well.
Not only that, but people have taken the drama to sports stadiums, finding humour in playfully mimicking the alleged couple. Whenever the “kiss cam” pans to a couple, they reenact the scandalous reactions of Byron and Cabot.
The trend has become a lighthearted way for people to poke fun at the scandal, extending beyond just sports events.
Businesses are also getting in on the action, using the scandal as a marketing opportunity. Seaweed & Salt, a restaurant in Kalk Bay, Cape Town, is offering a “Two for R200” deal with a cheeky twist: “Bring your wife, or her boss might.”
The CEO’s wife, Megan Kerrigan Byron, initially dropped the “Byron” last name from her Facebook account before completely deleting it.
Her Facebook page featured happy photos of her with her smiling husband and sons before she deleted the account after her spouse was outed at the concert, cuddling with the company’s head of HR.
She had posted happy photos on Facebook of herself with her smiling husband and sons. However, she later deleted her Facebook account.
