MENTAL health is often overlooked when it comes to people living with disabilities, despite the unique challenges they face.

Many individuals with disabilities encounter stigma, limited resources, and accessibility barriers, which can lead to feelings of isolation, loneliness, and being misunderstood. Recognising this critical need, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) is launching a free online mental health support group specifically for people living with disabilities.

This online support group aims to create a safe and supportive space where individuals can connect, share experiences, and receive advice and encouragement from others who truly understand their struggles. Meetings will take place on the first Tuesday of every month, with the inaugural session scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 6pm.

A Safe Space for Mental Health Conversations

The support group will be facilitated by Alexandra, who is passionate about fostering meaningful discussions around the intersection of disabilities and mental health.

“I want to create a space where people can explore the specific ways disabilities impact mental health. This group is about acknowledging those nuances and providing a platform for shared experiences,” says Alexandra.

She emphasises that the goal of the support group is to go beyond disabilities and focus on personal experiences, support, and emotional well-being.

“It’s about seeing each person beyond their disability. I hope to build a community where members feel comfortable sharing their challenges and strategies for navigating life without fear of judgment.  By doing so, we can create a sense of belonging and foster a space where everyone can gain new perspectives and grow together,” Alexandra adds.

How to Join the Support Group
