IN A HEARTWARMING revelation, Oxford University Press has announced "kindness" as its Children's Word of the Year for 2024. This uplifting choice was made after a comprehensive research project involving over 6,000 children aged 6 to 14 in the UK.
The study found that an overwhelming 61% of respondents chose "kindness" as their favourite word, surpassing contenders like "artificial intelligence" and "conflict".
Teachers participating in the research noted a significant increase in children's awareness of how acts of kindness contribute to mental health, particularly during challenging times.
Many young people cited the role of kindness in addressing the visible and hidden struggles others face, demonstrating a generation that is deeply empathetic and attuned to the needs of others.
Linda Roos, Dictionary Publisher at Oxford University Press South Africa, praised the study, saying, "This research highlights the importance of humanity among young minds. As adults, we should never underestimate children's ability to think deeply, their yearning for peace, and their relentless hope for positive change."
The study also explored children's views on artificial intelligence, which was voted runner-up by 25% of respondents. While some children expressed concerns about AI, 53% of those who selected "artificial intelligence" gave positive responses, such as "excited" and "optimistic".
In a world where digital and social media tools present both opportunities and challenges, kindness has become a vital counterbalance to negativity.
As Roos noted, "As parents, educators, and community leaders, it is our responsibility to model and encourage kindness. Small actions can make a significant difference, whether it's creating safe spaces for children to express themselves, celebrating acts of kindness in schools, or integrating social-emotional learning into the curriculum."
This year's choice of "kindness" is a testament to the optimism and empathy that define this generation.
